The Department of Academics is responsible for planning, coordination, development, oversight, and review of the academic programmes of the University. Various activities undertaken by the department are as under.
1. Preliminary planning and coordination
The department considers matters of academic interest either on its own initiative or at the instance of the Board of Management or those proposed by the departments/faculties and to take proper action thereon. Proposals for new programmes are initiated, and the department prepares preliminary drafts of the course design.
2. Course Design
Framing and revising the ordinances, guidelines and regulations are also conducted by the Department of Academics.
3. Approval of Statutory bodies
Seeking approval and recognition from statutory bodies like UGC, AICTE is done by the department. The director is the nodal for coordination and communication regarding programme recognition.
4. Constituting BoS and conducting meetings
The Board of Studies is constituted by the department for various academic programmes of the University. BoS is responsible for the approval of course design and course content.
5. Conducting Academic Council meetings
The academic council exercises general supervision over the academic policies of the University and gives directions regarding methods of instruction, evaluation or research or improvement in academic standards.
The Department of Academics coordinates and conducts academic council meetings. The proceedings of the BoS are vetted here, and all other matters that come under its purview are put up for approval.
6. Content development and design
The department identifies resource persons from various disciplines, provides training to these personnel and undertakes the process of self-learning material preparation. This is a detailed process wherein detailed guidelines are issued, and the entire content goes through the stringent steps of editing, review and approval from the statutory bodies.
7. Framing regulations
The department frames such regulations and rules consistent with the Statutes and the Ordinances regarding the academic functioning of the University, including discipline, admissions, award of fellowships and studentships, and other academic matters as mentioned in the Act. These ordinances are then approved by the statutory bodies.
8. Programme revision
The University revises the syllabus and the programmes' contents every three years, and the activity is conducted through the Academics department.
9. Academic calendar preparation
The academic calendar detailing the schedules for the year is prepared by the department jointly with the Department of student support.
10. Research promotion
The department promotes research within the University and acquires reports on such research from time to time.
11. Any other academic-related activity
The department exercises general supervision over the academic work of the university and gives direction regarding methods of instruction, evaluation, and improvements in academic standards.
The department makes recommendations to the Academic Council/Board of Management on (a) Measures for improvement of standards of teaching research and training; (b) Institution of fellowships, travel fellowships, scholarships, medals, prizes etc.
